Google Maps is wonderful and I do not even tell you Google Street View … I’m a fan! Search coordinates in Google Maps is one of its utilities, with the possibility of obtaining the latitude and longitude of any place on the planet.
In my case, this was useful for loading maps on a website: it would put the geographical coordinates and on the page you could see the map with the location of the place.
Find coordinates in Google Maps in very simple, I would say that with a handful of clicks you will get those numbers you want. So…
How to find coordinates in Google Maps?
Once you enter Google Maps, do the following:
Above, on the left, in the search engine, type the address or point of interest from which you wish to obtain latitude and longitude.
- You can search and a red arrow will mark the desired location.
- You position yourself on this arrow and click with the right mouse button.
- A menu will be displayed. Choose the third option that says “What’s in here?”
- By doing this, a small window with the address and coordinates will open below.
- By clicking on the coordinates, they will appear in the search engine where you initially entered the address.
And … extra data: when you search for a place in Google Maps, in the URL above, the coordinates also appear. In the Obelisk example, the URL is all.
You see that in bold I marked you where you can see the latitude and longitude.
Bonus track: how to read latitude and longitude.
Now, yes, this is not a geography class, but I do not want to finish the post without going over what these data mean. In the case of the format -34.603518, -58.381613, the minus signs give the pattern of the hemisphere: the first is the latitude, which with the least indicates that it is from the southern hemisphere.
In second number is the length and the least means that it is West. For that reason, when you have it in the format 34 ° 36’12.7 “S 58 ° 22’53.8” W, instead of indicating the hemisphere with the minus sign, it indicates it with a letter at the end: S of South (south) and West W (west).
6 tricks to search Google quickly and effectively
We all google and there is no science in it. What there are are some tricks to search Google more quickly and accurately. Called search operators, these filters are super useful when you are looking for something on the Internet and do not give the expected result.
Search on Google excluding words: Less
If you are looking for the recipe to make sushi, put Sushi Recipe and go. But suppose you’re doing research on cougars. You put Puma. And it turns out that in addition to being an animal is a footwear brand and the nickname of rugby players in Argentina. Put Puma in the search engine and you will get about 368,000,000 results. To eye you will go selecting those that speak of the animal.
But when searching on Google you can apply the minus sign to exclude. Putting: puma -shoes -shoes -shoes , the results are reduced to 93,700,000. Of course there are still many, but it is useful for cases like these, where a word has several strong results.
Search Google exact phrases: Comillas
This is Google’s best-known search filter. It involves putting quotation marks to trace an exact phrase, rather than single words. For example, if you put “Chocolate chip muffin recipe” you will only see results that contain exactly those words and in that order.
No chocolate muffins or chocolate chip scones recipes will appear, because even if they contain those words, you are asking Google, with the quotes, to search for an exact phrase.
Search in Google by file type: Filetype
It is not very frequent to do a search hoping to find a certain type of file, that is, instead of a traditional web page, it will show us PDF, Excel or Word files. But, maybe for some reason, especially in cases of deeper research, academic or journalistic, you want this.
Then, suppose you are looking for animal fauna in Mexico. If you want to see that topic but only in PDF files, add it to the search filetype: pdf. Then you have animal fauna in Mexico filetype: PDF and the results that Google will give you will only be of this type of files.
Search in Google information of a specific site: Site
You remember that you read a very interesting note about Pedro Almodóvar on Elpais.com. The usual thing is to enter the site of the newspaper and put the name of the director in your search engine. But it’s more effective than Google searching for it. Why? Because Google’s tools for tracking information are more effective than the internal search engines of websites.
How you do? Simple. You put in Google: Pedro Almodóvar site: elpais.com and he will throw you all the notes of that site about the film director.
Search in Google by title: allintitle
There are thousands of notes that name Pedro Almodóvar, but do not necessarily speak of him. For example: articles about the actors and actresses who worked with him or about prizes he presented. Tooooodas those notes will go googling Pedro Almodóvar. 425,000 results.
Now, if I just want notes that have the name of the director in the title I put allintitle: pedro almodóvar and bingo! The search is reduced to 48,000 results, only 10% of the total.
Search Google several options: OR
This capital is how you use this search engine that serves to combine the previous ones. How is this? You want all the notes about Almodóvar on elpais.com and on lanacion.com then you have to place pedro almodóvar site: elpais.com OR site: lanacion.com
Or maybe you want muffins with strawberries or peaches, then you use OR and the quotation marks putting “muffins with strawberries” OR “muffins with peaches” . Both this and the other filters can be combined to obtain more specific results.
